Band Camp Information
Hello band families!!
With the start of band camp upon us, I wanted to pass on some information to old and new families alike about staying hydrated and well during the hot weeks of camp.
First of all, drinking water is key. We will be doing things a little differently this year, as we will not be providing cups of water to students except in emergencies. Getting all of those cups is a big undertaking, and quite frankly wasteful as most kids take a drink and throws it away. Each student will need to bring a water jug filled and ready for the day. They will also need to bring the jug home each day to wash and refill. I know sometimes they like to leave them in the band room, but bacteria will grow after a few days, which can make them sick. If anyone has difficulty getting a water jug, we do have a few that have been donated. Please contact Mr. Craig, Michelle Messer, or myself.
When you get home from a hot day at camp, be sure to drink a couple of full glasses throughout the evening to rehydrate before starting again the next day.
Also, I suggest getting a “cooling towel” for your camper. Dicks has them in a display near the checkouts for $3. They are pretty amazing as you can wet them with even warm water, snap them a couple of times, and they turn into a nice cool towel they can wrap around their neck.
Band camp days are long and strenuous. It is important to eat a good breakfast in the morning before coming to camp. Protein will help give long lasting energy – eggs, peanut butter, milk even a protein shake or bars are all good ideas. Also be sure to pack a good lunch. You will be hungry! It’s okay to pack a snack you can eat quickly on a break as well if you find you are getting hungry between meals.
Sunscreen is a good idea as well as a hat to keep the sun off your face and/or neck. Good shoes with support are necessary as you will be on your feet most of the day – especially drum line, pit and color guard.

If your child will be taking prescription medication during the hours of band camp, please complete the survey link below: (This includes both school administered and self-carry/self-administered medications) https://forms.gle/efaBp7uDtHCQGQZ96
This survey must be completed by Wednesday July 17th. We will have a table in the band room to drop off any school administered medication from 8-8:25am on Monday July 22nd. Students and/or parents can drop off the medication. School administered medications must be in their original containers with clearly marked labels indicating the student’s name and dosage/time of dosage information.
If you have any additional questions/information in this regard, please contact Mr. Craig: joseph.craig@boone.kyschools.us
No other medication (such as Motrin, Tylenol, Midol, etc.) will be administered to a student during camp/rehearsal hours by any of the parents assisting with band camp. If your child feels they need some medication while at camp/rehearsal, the same rules will apply as they do during the school year. They will have to call a parent and request the parent bring it to them.
Please feel free to ask any of the many parent volunteers you will see throughout the season for anything you or your student may need. The ultimate goal is for them to be successful, feel well, and have a great time while they are working so hard. Any of the parents/instructors are happy to help.
Here’s to the start of a great season!
